Welcome to the "dark net", an unregulated space being used to a large extent to engage in illegal activity, discuss child abuse, search for information on censored topics, organize political action and, more and more, to buy and sell weapons and controlled substances. Of course, by sheer virtue of the dark net's anonymity it's difficult to be certain just who, exactly, you are communicating with, and to what degree offers and posts on various platforms and forums translate from the digital underbelly to the actual physical world. VICE Germany editor Tom Littlewood went looking for where these two spheres come together. Tom speaks to a German weapons dealer about sales and distribution, and about how easy and reliable the system even is. Tom also catches up with cryptology specialist Karsten Nohl, torservers.net founder Moritz Bartl, and Ehsan Norouzi, an Iranian journalist who helps activists communicate safety, on the positive and negative aspects of a virtual space.

Weeks before the almost unfathomable mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, Rocco Castoro visited Florida to dive headfirst into its byzantine firearms laws and discover why his home state was the first in the nation to issue over one million concealed weapons permits. Through interviews and time on the range with veterans, law enforcement officials, and gun-store owners, VICE digs deep into the gun debate and uncovers many troubling revelations along the way. Oh, we also use a Craigslist-like site to arrange for the purchase of a handgun at 10 PM in the parking lot of a big-box hardware store. And it's all 100-percent legal. Welcome to Florida.

An ongoing source of controversy in America, gun laws are increasingly polarising the Southern states and Washington. In Arizona, Tea Party supporting, heavily armed, vigilante groups are taking over. "The one thing we know about gun control is that it has never provided security", argues former Arizona sheriff and local hero, Richard Mack. Despite a recent gun massacre in Tuscon, the majority still support free gun laws. Heavily armed citizens take Mexican border security into their own hands in this "state with a frontier mentality". With over 100 new civilian militia groups forming in the last 2 years, it is fertile ground for Tea Party supporters. There is no doubt as to who is the real enemy here: "The greatest threat to our God-given American liberty is our own federal government". With the cultural divide between North and South looking dangerously wide, Arizona is becoming more than a state: it's a state of mind.
