The recent spate of violent rapes and sex attacks in India has shocked the world, but it’s been the subsequent reaction of authorities that’s proved just as shocking for many. Amos Roberts investigates two rape cases that turned into political scandals. Suzette Jordan decided to speak out about her gang rape attack after being mocked by police and becoming the target of a vicious smear campaign by senior politicians. She challenges the mentality of those in power who seek to blame the victim. Amos also investigates the story of a teenage rape victim who died in mysterious circumstances after falsely accusing two men of setting her on fire – men who have now spent more than three months in jail. Has the balance of justice turned far enough in favour of the victims? Or could it even have turned too far? Under Indian law it is not possible to identify rape victims without their consent, even after their death. Therefore we have not used the name of the 16-year-old rape victim in the online version of this story.]]>

When a national inquiry into abuse claims in the Catholic Church was launched in Ireland, thousands of victims saw it as their long-overdue moment of justice. But why have no criminal prosecutions followed? "It was full of terror. Adults were beating up children for nothing," remembers Bernadette Fahey. She is one of the thousands of victims who have sought justice from the Catholic Church for their stolen childhoods. Frustratingly, it is the unfathomable extent of the crimes that halted the inquiry. Also, the police could not use information provided to the Commission and religious bodies went to the High Court to stop the Commission from naming any of their members. Although a compensation payout had been agreed, the Church moved quickly to limit its financial liability. This offers little consolation to John Kelly: "He's enjoying his retirement. I have nightmares every night about what he did to me. How could they call that justice?"]]>

Gang rape hit the headlines last year after the brutal attack of a woman on a bus in India’s capital, Delhi. But new research suggests that gang rape is a wider problem across Asia - with some of the highest recorded levels of violence against women in the world to be found within the Asia-Pacific region. Despite years of attention and millions spent on preventing it, there has been little or no measured decrease in its occurrence. And simply responding to the outcomes of violence has not been enough to end it. For the first time, researchers have compiled cross-country data from men - those who admit to using violence against women, and those who do not. It is hoped that understanding men’s own experiences will help to target the causes of violence against women and prevent it from happening at all. Four UN agencies interviewed 10,000 men across seven countries in the Asia-Pacific, with startling results. One in four said they had raped a woman or girl, while one in 25 admitted to taking part in gang rape. Men say they start raping early, often in their teenage years and are frequently motivated by sexual entitlement. While the rates of violence are shocking, the variations between countries is giving hope to those working on programmes to prevent violence and rape, because it demonstrates that early intervention can make a difference. The research confirmed that there is no single cause of violence, but a complex interplay of factors related to individual experiences, community norms, and societal elements. 101 East travels to Cambodia, a country representing some of the highest levels of rape in the region, to speak with men themselves about why they commit these crimes and to find out if the perpetrators can trigger new ideas for prevention.]]>

One in three Native American women will experience sexual abuse at some point in their lifetime. That is more than twice the national average. And for the women of Alaska, the US state with the highest incidence of rape, the situation is particularly bleak. Donna Erikson is a Native Alaskan woman and a survivor of sexual abuse. She, and those who share this devastating history, are now embracing the transformative power of lifting the burden of silence within their community by speaking out about sexual assault. In Burden of Silence we hear her story and see, through the work of a Native Alaskan state trooper, the challenging reality of law enforcement for a crime that is so frequently hushed up by victim and victimiser alike.]]>
