"McConkey," a 90-minute documentary to be released in 2013, is a heartfelt examination of the legacy one athlete left to the progression of his sports, and the path he paved to conquer his dreams. Shane McConkey is revered as the pioneer of freeskiing and ski base jumping, and through his talent and unique outlook on life, he inspired countless lives. "McConkey" celebrates the life of one of the world's ultimate innovators From Wikipedia: "On March 26, 2009, Shane McConkey died while skiing in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy. After performing a double back flip, McConkey intended to glide away in his wingsuit, "a stunt he's executed a number of times", according to a statement from Matchstick Productions, the company whose films McConkey often starred in. But McConkey struggled to release his skis. By the time he got them off, he'd been free-falling for 12 seconds and was too close to the ground for his wingsuit or parachute to do him any good. His parachute did not malfunction; it was never deployed. He died on the scene."]]>

Wingsuit basejumper crashes while shooting doc for HBO https://documentary.net/video/wingsuit-basejumper-crashes-while-shooting-doc-for-hbo/ https://documentary.net/video/wingsuit-basejumper-crashes-while-shooting-doc-for-hbo/#respond Sat, 25 Feb 2012 09:43:53 +0000 http://documentary.net/?p=5239

"Birdman" Jeb Corless was crashing into Table Mountain, South Africa while doing a flyby for an HBO documentary. He then tumbled through the air and attempted to deploy his parachute before hitting the ground. His injuries saw him break most of the bones in his legs and had him confined to a hospital bed for nearly five weeks. May be disturbing to some viewers...
I was flying to close and messed up :) I was going for a black balloon that was basically laying on the rocks and was going to try and kick it with my foot. In order to do this I had to fly low and flat between boulders. My left foot clipped a boulder that dragged me into a flat ledge that I took at the waist at full speed. If I had not clipped that boulder I might have made it, I might have still impacted. It's very hard to tell from the footage. Everything happens very fast. But when you go for a flight where inches are the difference between making it and not making it well impact is very possible. I knew this and took the risk and paid the price for pushing way to hard. I take full responsibility for my actions and am just happy I still have legs to do rehab on. This is not my first time getting hurt and it will not be my last. I push it, always have and always will. One day I will die and I just hope that when I do, it will be doing something I truly love...

A collection of shots from flights made during the 2009-2010 season by the talented group of wingsuit basejumpers, while flying the V3, Hybrid LD2/Trango rigs and testing several new V-series wingsuit prototypes around Europe. This is just amazing and way more fascinating than special effects can ever be. And please: KIDS DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME ;-) ]]>
