Sorry but wow I just got two more minutes into the vid and my blood begins to boil at the backpack wearing wanker 7.00 minute mark. I am so pale that in winter you can see clean through me, and I say Gypies are good people. They have given me food when they havent had much. I spent much of last year homeless. It was worst for my dog than me because incrediblly I didnt drink much then. I know that this comment is 2 years too late and I am drunk but I dont see where the bad journalism is. Fair enough he doesnt have the charrm that a Theroux presentation has, but at least he is actually trying to comprehend their experience. Terrible journalism Evan. Very disappointing. I work for a homelessness charity in London and the representative from Westminster Council is extremely unhelpful, he makes massive and largely inaccurate generalisations about both the homeless and migrants from Eastern Europe. In truth London is well ahead of the curve when it comes to humane and constructive approaches to dealing with homelessness. Thermal imaging of properties in Slough? Let’s talk about affordable housing and a living wage. This is almost a UKIP publicity piece – UKIP (like the Australian Liberals) are a fringe party for the ignorant.

There are many, many other sides to this issue and this piece does no justice to any of them. The underlying argument that this gives voice to, that homelessness in the UK is a product of the UK’s membership of the EU is totally flawed. True there are some migrants from Eastern Europe who find themselves homeless, in part because of some of the obstacles they are presented with when trying to access the labour market, but the majority of homeless in London are UK nationals. Read the reports if you care about the issue. Homeless Link (not my employer) and FEANTSA (for Europe-wide research) are good sources of information.
