Fashion Week Internationale heads to Medellin for Colombia Fashion Week. Formerly the old stomping ground of Pablo Escobar, the city is now trying to throw off its powdery legacy and push fashion up the noses of the world. Medellin is also fast becoming the plastic surgery capital of South America; people are flying in from all over the world to sample the city's budget body enhancement. We look at how the legacy of the narco-aesthetic inspired by the heady days of the Escobar era is being pushed out in favor of a more European silhouette, i.e. less tits and ass. Along our journey we meet Escobar's brother, Roberto, and Charlet tries her hand (and legs) at the national sport of pole dancing. We also find out just how far one woman will go to plump her buns.]]>

The Perfect Vagina (2008) [Review] https://documentary.net/magazine/the-perfect-vagina-2008-review/ https://documentary.net/magazine/the-perfect-vagina-2008-review/#respond Thu, 26 May 2011 07:25:26 +0000 http://documentary.net/?p=1662

This entertaining and moving documentary presented by Lisa Rogers follows a special kind of business: genital plastic surgery in the UK. Rogers intends to find out why more and more young girls want to have their private parts corrected and talks to doctors and women who plan to get genital surgery. Her conclusion: women are under enormous pressure to look good in today’s society. Rogers, who also is an actress, is very compassionate when talking to the women. She shows a lot of emotion and is not afraid to cry in front of the camera. It reveals a big deal about western society’s twisted ideal of female beauty when even 14-year-old girls are afraid that their vagina might be malformed. During her research Rogers has her own vagina examined by a surgeon and talks to men who don’t like "ugly" vaginas. The camera also takes a look inside operating rooms and films operations – some of that particular footage might be shocking or disturbing for some viewers. Though there is a lot of personal tragedy to be found in The Perfect Vagina, the film also contains funny elements, for example when Rogers meets an artist who casted 160 women’s vulvas to create a huge sculptural vaginal wall. “I’m hoping that together we can show women that each vagina is unique – and that there is nothing wrong with that”, Rogers says. Hopefully this message will reach many young women. documentary.net says: Entertaining doc with an important message. Watch it here ]]>

In the past five years, private health sectors have reported a 300 per cent increase in individuals seeking vaginal cosmetic surgery, for both aesthetic and cultural purposes. Lisa Rogers sets out to discover why so many British women, including girls as young as 16, are so ill at ease with their own labias, and attempts to find a less drastic alternative to going under the knife. In this honest, witty and compassionate film Lisa Rogers tries to find out why more and more women are considering vaginal surgery for either aesthetic or cultural reasons. Heather Leads and Lisa Rogers decided to make this film when they found out about the huge amount of vaginal surgery that is performed (4 parts, skip the breaks).]]>
