Over the past 8 years, YouTube has given birth to an increasingly sophisticated entertainment culture that operates outside of the traditional television and film ecosystem. With humble roots in charismatic and creative people simply sharing their lives, thoughts, and humor to their webcams, YouTube entertainment has diversified and grown into tens of thousands of unique channels with millions of loyal fans and subscribers. With a new generation of viewers increasingly turning to YouTube instead of broadcast TV, a new industry is being built around personalities who have dissolved the barriers between on-screen talent and the audience, and who employ visual aesthetics that make the viewer feel as if they are a part of the creator's life. Truly, we are in a new era of entertainment, one being led by millions of young people who are equally happy to watch video on their laptop as they are on their TV. YouTube enables 6 new langauges for auto-captions https://documentary.net/magazine/youtube-enables-6-new-langauges-for-auto-captions/ https://documentary.net/magazine/youtube-enables-6-new-langauges-for-auto-captions/#respond Thu, 29 Nov 2012 09:48:34 +0000 http://documentary.net/?p=8765

Did you ever come across the auto-captions feature on YouTube? When viewing a YouTube video people can click the CC button in the toolbar. This enables the automatic capturing of the film. Meaning the systems tries to identify the talking and automatically generates the subtitles. This works lets say - more or less good. Now this feature is available for six new languages: German, Italian, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Dutch (plus the existing English, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish). If you are not happy with the captions you can always change them with a provided editing tool. You can also download, edit them offline and reupload your captions file. YouTube is also working on auto translated captions, so you can read/understand them independent from the original shooting language. The far more better solution is for sure a handcrafted human captions file, with the exact timcodes and most important the exact meaning. But this can be too expensive for some independent filmmakers. So especially for deaf, hard-of-hearing, and viewers who speak other languages the auto-feature is a nice service. On July 24th 2010, more than 80.000 people from 192 countries uploaded their day to YouTube to take part in Life in a Day, to create a documentary film about a single day on earth. The filmmakers Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald whittled down over 4500 hours of footage into a 90-minute film that was first shown at the Sundance, Berlin and SXSW Filmfestival in 2011. Now after the film was realeased in theaters around the globe, the film has returned to where it all began: the internet - for free. Subtitles available in almost any language. Enjoy!]]>
