Illustrators articulate what a photograph cannot. Using an array of techniques and styles, illustrators evoke stories and meaning in a variety of mediums, from editorial illustration in magazines and newspapers, to comics books, to activist media. And as their tasks over the years have become less informational and more expressive, their individual voice as artists becomes all the more critical and beautiful, revealing an exciting and awe-inspiring age of illustration. Featuring: Steven Guarnaccia, Professor, Illustration Program at The New School Yuko Shimisu Sean Murphy Molly Crabapple]]>

Logos surround us in digital and physical space, but we rarely examine the thought and artistic thinking that goes into the design of these symbols. Utilizing a silent vocabulary of colors, shapes, and typography, logo designers give a visual identity to companies and organizations of all types. From cave painters to modern designers, artists throughout history have been reducing the complex down to simple ideas that communicate with the world.]]>

The credits are often the first thing we see when we watch a great film or TV show, but the complexity and artistry of title design is rarely discussed. Creators of title sequences are tasked to invent concepts that evoke the core story and themes of the production, and to create a powerful visual experience that pulls the viewer into the film's world. In this film we hear the stories of some of the most inventive people working in the field, including the creators of the iconic Mad Men sequence, the hilarious Zombieland opening and "rules" sequences, and the stirring end credits from Blue Valentine. ]]>

Director Kai Sehr paid a visit to the Swiss design collective and documented how they stay true to their motto of over 15 years: "Small City. Big Design." The project: The development of a typeface from a pen. Namely the most distinctive permanent marker by pen manufacturer edding, which therefore can now write on computers, too. We swim in an ocean of products. Behind each one, there is someone (hopefully) thinking about the way we experience it. The film explores three aspects of product design: build quality and engineering fundamentals, humanism and sustainability, and speculation on the future of the product experience. Interviews with fuseproject’s Yves Behar, Peter Schmitt of MIT’s Personal Robotics Group, and Dr. Harvey Moscot of Mocost Eyewear. In discussion with the 4th generation owner of a classic brand, a brilliant designer of socially progressive products, and an MIT researcher looking to revolutionize the product experience through 3D printing, we'll capture a sense of the values and challenges in the contemporary world of product design.]]>
