Is Photoshop Remixing the World? https://documentary.net/video/is-photoshop-remixing-the-world/ https://documentary.net/video/is-photoshop-remixing-the-world/#respond Fri, 12 Apr 2013 07:44:19 +0000 http://documentary.net/?p=9645

Photoshop has completely revolutionized our visual culture. Artists now use Photoshop to create complex imagery that would have been impossible 20 years ago. It has also profoundly changed the art of photo retouching, turning a labor intensive process into an artful and often controversial digital workflow. But possibly the most current and expressive influence can be seen in meme culture online. With the ability to alter any image in the media landscape, everyday people now have the means to critically comment on culture and spread their ideas virally, leveling the playing field between traditional media creators and consumers. Photoshop has changed the way we communicate, the way we express ourselves, and the way we view the world and each other. Staff Sgt. Ryan Crane is a United States Air Force photojournalist and was deployed to Afghanistan twice. In this film he shares his experiences as a photojournalist in a combat environment as well as the mental and physical toll it takes on him. He says: "It's really hard to just, when you're on a patrol with you know a hundred other people to stop and just say "I wanna take a picture for just 30 minutes"... You don't have that luxury. You are walking in your unifrom with these people so you have to constantly be moving while taking pictures so I don't have the luxury of always looking through the lens I don't have the luxury of stopping in getting these photos that I want. It's really hard, you learn you can torture bodies in certain ways. You learn to pretty much never look through the viewfinder of the cameram, you just don't have time... ...As unprofessional or bad it may sound, a lot of times my photos are me sticking my camera way up in the air are way down lower way out to the side and just you know, just praying and praying and hoping I get something." This film meets Ricky Powell, a native New Yorker whose photographs of iconic people such as the Beastie Boys, Keith Haring and Cindy Crawford made him a pivotal figure in the downtown party scene during the '80s and '90s. Now 50, Ricky’s lust for photography and music is still strong. Through his eccentricities such as his love for a transistor radio and feeding squirrels in the park, we gain an insight into his everyday life. Retrospective of New York City and how it has changed over his lifetime, he shows us around the city and contemplates what the future holds.]]>

Today publishers and newspapers spend more and more money on stock images instead of hiring a photographer. Fernando Martins travelled to Denmark to meet the king of stock images: Jesper Bruun. He is always with you, everywhere you go. He is omnipresent: He is The World's Most Downloaded Man. A strange meeting of a model and a photographer. While there is no confirmation of Jesper Bruun being really top 1 stock model, we like idea of the film (actually more than the film...).]]>

Light painting dates back to Man Ray, but contemporary photographers are taking the practice of “painting light” onto long-exposure photographs to a new level. Patrick Rochon and Aurora Crowley, two light painters in love with color, form, and the expressive possibilities of light, discuss their work and their unique process. ]]>

Duffy together with David Bailey and Terence Donovan is recognized as one of the innovators of "documentary" fashion photography, a style which revolutionized fashion imagery and furthermore the fashion industry. So influential were their images that in 1962 the Sunday Times dubbed Duffy, Bailey & Donovan the "Terrible Trio" and Norman Parkinson further added to their notoriety by naming them "The Black Trinity". Together they dominated the London photographic scene, constantly pushing each other to new heights. Even socially they would spend many hours together talking, living and breathing photography.]]>

The Sartorialist is a fashion blog by Scott Schuman in New York. After leaving a fashion sales position to take care of his daughter in 2005, he began carrying a digital camera around on the streets of New York City, taking pictures of people who had dressed in some way that caught his eye, and then posting them to his blog, sometimes with comments about what he finds. He pioneered fashion photography in blog form. (Text from Wikipedia) ]]>
