Ukraine’s Crowdfunded Military & Weaponized Drones https://documentary.net/video/ukraines-crowdfunded-military-drone/ https://documentary.net/video/ukraines-crowdfunded-military-drone/#respond Thu, 23 Jul 2015 15:44:19 +0000 http://documentary.net/?post_type=assets&p=12335

Crowd-funding campaigns can raise money for some pretty wacky projects, such as asteroid defense or images of brains on LSD. But rarely do you hear of campaigns raising funds for military equipment. Enter the People’s Project, a volunteer-led organization based in Ukraine that has a section currently raising funds for a military drone.
The war in eastern Ukraine has cost the lives of over 6,000 people. And despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary Russia continues to deny its involvement in the war. Although the Ukrainians asked the US for support they have been given very little to fight the russian-backed separatist. Facing another collapsing cease-fire without any serious support from the west, Ukrainian citizens have taken it upon themselves to build and supply their military with proper equipment including crowdfunding surveillance drones and now some have even begun building weaponized drones.

For three weeks, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian protesters have been flooding the streets of Kiev, occupying government buildings and taking over the city's Independence Square. Initially, the demonstrators were expressing discontent at President Viktor Yanukovych's decision to pull out of a deal that would bring Ukraine closer to joining the European Union. After an initial brutal police crackdown, the protests have grown in size and are now more about toppling the government and putting an end to corruption than joining the EU. The police have tried and failed to clear the tent city that has sprung up in the Independence Square—also known as the Maidan—and the occupied city hall that has been dubbed the "Revolution HQ." Protesters remain in the streets, despite the below zero temperatures.]]>

Valeria Lukyanova is the Ukrainian girl who turned herself into a real life Barbie doll – an extreme example of body morphing through alleged cosmetic surgery and image manipulation. Since her computer-perfect visage went viral last year, speculation and controversy have surrounded her every move. However, what most people don’t know, is that Valeria wholeheartedly claims not to be a real lady at all, but a time traveling spiritual guru whose purpose is to save the world from the clutches of superficiality and negative energy. In an exclusive access film, VICE travelled to Valeria’s home in the Ukraine to uncover the truth behind the woman’s extraordinary appearance. Valeria claims that she never tried to look like a doll, but that dolls are simply based upon the notion of the “perfect woman”. However, troublingly for Valeria, she believes that “perfection has no limit”. Casting herself as a psychic, almost messiah-like figure, and spiritual leader, Valeria clearly holds a lofty perception of herself. Yet, speaking to her friends and family, VICE explore the reality of a life led largely online, meeting the girl behind the mask and ultimately asking: what happens when that mask slips?]]>

Odessa Girls – New Love in Ukraine? https://documentary.net/video/odessa-girls-new-love-in-ukraine/ https://documentary.net/video/odessa-girls-new-love-in-ukraine/#comments Thu, 03 Jan 2013 14:10:55 +0000 http://documentary.net/?p=9006

With its seemingly endless supply of beautiful young, single women, Odessa, on the frontier of the ex-Soviet union, is fast becoming the seedy new tourist magnet for single American men of all ages. "I'm already too old for the men here... Getting a man here is very competitive, because there are so few of them." In a city where women outnumber men almost five to four, Julia's situation is typical of many. Following an abusive marriage she signed up with one of the many local agencies that offer the chance to be paired up with hopefuls from abroad. Paying upwards of three and a half thousand dollars, men from across the globe travel to Odessa in the hope of meeting beautiful young women. But despite accusations of being little more than a legalised pimping service, clients such as Arthur, a 65 year-old veteran of six romance tours, have no qualms with the service they offer. "It's like purchasing a very nice used Cadillac," he explains. "I need to drive it before I make a decision about taking it home and putting it in my garage." But for the women who don't get picked it's frequently a case of disappointment and heartbreak. "It feels like we're goods in a market," explains Julia. "No one there looks inside our hearts."]]>

The Politics of Football – Ukraine EURO 2012 https://documentary.net/video/the-politics-of-football-ukraine-euro-2012/ https://documentary.net/video/the-politics-of-football-ukraine-euro-2012/#respond Sun, 20 May 2012 15:55:00 +0000 http://documentary.net/?p=6659

With the 2012 UEFA European Championship around the corner, Ukraine finds itself in the world's spotlight. But with its poor human rights record and widespread corruption should it be co-hosting the event? Football fans travelling to Kharkov will probably not notice much but the Ukraine, sometimes referred to as 'the Wild East', is a country where power lies in the hands of the super rich. Critical journalism is silenced and people are routinely tortured by police. Ten minutes from the stadium political prisoner, Julia Tymoshenko, is on hunger strike, with fresh charges being prepared against her. "The prosecutor could take a blank piece of paper and write on it that she killed Kennedy and she would be convicted for it". Roman Zabzaliuk, a member of Tymoshenko's opposition party, went undercover to prove a network of bribery and blackmail at the heart of government. Yet despite his evidence, he says that "everyone is silent". UEFA boss Platini has refused to comment on the political maelstrom, but others argue, "even in football there are basic values. They should speak up if the country hosting has no fairness and doesn't follow the rules."]]>
