The only escapee of North Koreas most brutal prison camp has lived to tell us a story of unspeakable horror. Starved of food and common humanity, Shin proves that gulags are still a tragic reality. We were always hungry. Shins most vivid memory of his life in the camp is the constant hunger he felt, food made me escape, even if it was going to cost me my life. The only thing that interested me was the food. Before his escape three years ago, he didnt even know that a world existed beyond the barbed wires. Until then, his life had been one of torture, hard labour and complete isolation. My mother was supposed to inform on me and me on her. He believed she deserved her fate as he witnessed her execution. I blamed her. I had no real feelings as a kid. Shin didnt know love, only violence. Once the guards beat a little girl on the head so hard, she died the next day. He eventually escaped through a gap in a high-voltage fence. His charred legs still bear the scars. As horrible as it is, Shins story is not unique. Wang, himself a former prisoner, is a prominent writer on the subject. He believes that oppression in North Korea will keep increasing: The brutality of the system has grown to the point where Kim Jong Il now fears that he will suffer the same fate as Caucescu of Romania. He simply wants to kill all his enemies.]]>

In the Caucasus, the US and Russia are vying for control of the region. The great oil game is in full swing. Whoever controls the Caucasus and its roads, controls the transport of oil from the Caspian Sea. Tbilisi, Erevan and Baku - the three capitals of the Caucasus. The oil from Baku in Azerbaijan is a strategic priority for all the major companies. From the fortunes of the Nobel family to the Russian revolution, to World War II, oil from the Caucasus and the Caspian has played a central role. Lenin fixated on conquering the Azeri capital Baku for its oil, as did Stalin and Hitler. On his birthday in 1941, Adolf Hitler received a chocolate and cream birthday cake, representing a map. He chose the slice with Baku on it. On June 22nd 1941, the armies of the Third Reich invaded Russia. The crucial battle of Stalingrad was the key to the road to the Caucasus and Baku's oil, and would decide the outcome of the war. Stalin told his troops: "Fighting for one's oil is fighting for one's freedom." After World War II, President Nikita Krushchev would build the Soviet empire and its Red Army with revenues from the USSR's new-found oil reserves. Decades later, oil would bring that empire to its knees, when Saudi Arabia and the US would conspire to open up the oil taps, flood the markets, and bring the price of oil down to $13 per barrel. Russian oligarchs would take up the oil mantle, only to be put in their place by their president, Vladimir Putin, who knows that oil is power. The US and Putin's Russia would prop up despots, and exploit regional conflicts to maintain a grip on the oil fields of the Caucusus and the Caspian. But they would not have counted on the rise of a new, strong and hungry China, with an almost limitless appetite for oil and energy. Today, the US, Russia and China contest the control of the former USSR's fossil fuel reserves, and the supply routes. A three-handed match, with the world as spectators, between three ferocious beasts -- The American eagle, the Russian bear, and the Chinese dragon.]]>

Valery Malkov made the headlines when he fell out of a train in Siberia in -40 degrees Celsius wearing practically nothing, then ran 30 minutes to the next station and lived to tell the tale. The film explores the way the human body reacts and adapts to cold and meets frost enthusiasts who willingly subject themselves to extreme temperatures. A 42-year-old Russian man literally ran for his life for seven kilometers in the freezing cold after he accidentally fell off a train in the country’s Far East – wearing only a T-shirt, sweatpants and slippers. The man said that he had gone to the train’s vestibule for a smoke. As he was coming back to his carriage, he missed his door and opened another one to a non-functioning vestibule. He stepped into the dark – and then found himself in taiga forest, on the railroad, all alone. The passenger ran after the train for seven kilometers, but couldn’t catch up with it. At the next station – ‘Richard Sorge,’ only 150 kilometers away from the train’s final destination – the man was given help. “The 42-year-old man survived by sheer luck,” the Interior Ministry’s local transport department reported on Friday. An investigation into the matter has been launched, and police are trying to ascertain whether what happened was an accident, or whether a train attendant forgot to close the door out of neglect. Local media reported that the man turned out to be a driver working under a rotation system in Russia’s Far East. “He is feeling fine, has already started working, and has suffered no bodily harm. Certainly, he had been very scared, but got over the shock,” the man’s employer told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper. The train was traveling from Moscow to Nerungri, a city in Russia’s Far East, which has a population of just over 62,000 people. The average winter temperatures in the area measure around -30°C.]]>

Deep in Siberia's Taiga forest is Vissarion, a cult leader who looks like Jesus and claims to be the voice of God. He's known as "the Teacher" to his 4,000 followers, who initially seem surprisingly normal. Over time, however, their unflinching belief in UFOs and the Earth's imminent demise made this group start to look more and more like some sort of strange cult. ]]>

We visit the Republic of Kazantip, an annual month-long rave/orgy on the southern coast of the Ukraine. Ravers are called citizens, visas are required for entry, and there is even a Minister of Foreign Affairs. The whole scene is trapped somewhere in the 90s with its platform shoes, pink dreadlocks, and energy drinks. We head to the Black Sea coast for the closing party and make friends with the luminaries of Russian criminal society. (Film published in 2007)]]>
