The collapse of Venezuela and President Maduro's rise to dictatorship. Venezuela was once the richest country in Latin America. It has the largest known oil reserves in the world. And its democratic government was once praised world wide. But today, Venezuela’s democratic institutions and its economy are in shambles. The country has the highest inflation in the world, making food and medicine inaccessible to most Venezuelans. Over the last four years, its GDP has fallen 35%, which is a sharper drop than the one seen during the Great Depression in the US. The country’s murder rate has surpassed that of the most dangerous cities in the world. These conditions have sparked months of protests against the president, Nicolas Maduro. And it’s easy to see why: the country has become measurably worse since his election in 2013.  ]]>

Last year alone, Caracas had more violent deaths than Baghdad. Ryan Duffy traveled to Venezuela to investigate the country's crime epidemic. While President Hugo Chavez has raked in billions from Venezuela's oil boom, the crime rate in Caracas has skyrocketed. The crime epidemic has been so punishing that it could be the reason Hugo Chavez finally topples in the country's upcoming elections.]]>

Venezuela. One cannot only hear with ones ears. Some people feel the sounds with their skin or with their hearts because their sense of hearing doesn't function. In the Venezuelan city of Barquisimeto, deaf children not only learn how to play instruments, but also how to sing in sign language. The fact that the children do not hear voices is only one of the many handicaps when one lives at the edge of society. However, at the music school they discover a world that is open to each one of them. The film observes the everyday lives and development of its protagonists in a precise and intimate way. Music as the way out and as a chance for those who practice it. Subtitles available.]]>
